I think it's great for a middle aged woman to have long hair as long as it's healthy and not full of split ends or that horribly bleach blond look. I am so sick that women over 30 seem to think they must have short hair! I am 34 and my hair is just below my breasts and I love it and so do the guys! I do look young for my age though. I think if you are over 40 with long hair, it does generally look better pulled back a bit though like with a barette! It also looks great pulled back in a bun. I am so sick of short hair on women! It just looks soooo boring. Like I said, as long as your hair is healthy and not that awful stringy, fake, hillbilly blond look, go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're over 40 and have gorgeous hair, go for it! But mature the style. Don't keep it much longer than just past the shoulders.

I've seen many older ladies with hair past their shoulders but done in a braid, this looks old or frumpy.

Some ideas:

- Keep the hair style soft, think layers, waves

- highlights/lowlights If your hair is greying, get some blonder highlights. Avoid harsh hair colors though, jet black doesn't work on people over 16 unless its their natural color.

- keep it well conditioned - as you get older, your hair might look dryer.

- no longer than about 4" below your shoulders...really long hair does not look good on anyone

- avoid frumpy styles - like the braid...or *gasp* pig tails (you'd be suprised)

I don't think you should celebrate your 40th birthday by getting a "mom cut". By now you should know what features are really strong on your face, and what you want emphasized, so go work your features.
